Quantifying gender gaps in seismology authorship

Abstract. According to 2018 demographic data of the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, seismology is among geoscience fields with lowest representation women. To understand whether this reflects more generally, we investigate women's authorship peer-reviewed publications, a key factor in career advancement. Building upon open-source tools for web-scraping, create database bibliographic information seismological articles published 14 international journals from 2010 2020. We use probabilities author names being either male- or female-gendered analyse women authors terms position and subsequently per journal, year, publication productivity. The results indicate that (1) overall probability first (last) female 0.28 (0.19); (2) calculated rate increase 2020, equal male would be reached towards end century; (3) compared (0.76), single-authored papers our are disproportionately by (with 0.83); (4) decreases highly productive authors; (5) rather than random, composition appears influenced gender – firstly, all-male teams common what expected if were composed randomly; secondly, co-authors increases when last female, but have low working co-authors.
